BACKGROUND: ABUSE AND TORTURE:

History of Human Depravity: Persons who abuse and torture have been victimizing the vulnerable among us for thousands of years, although new methods of communication may have given populations the impression that such horrific brutality is largely modern in nature.

Traditional Public Response: When the media reports on these cases, many people rely on authority figures to respond in an appropriate manner. Unfortunately, current strategies designed to protect the vulnerable have failed to reduce the incidence of torture and relational violence, which is especially heart rending when children are the victims. Little Phoenix, the child from Manitoba who was tortured for years before her death, represents a worst case scenario.

Opportunity for Change: At this moment in time, there may be an unprecedented opportunity for individuals to contribute their voice and/or ideas to the fight against relational violence, by building on the interest and activity of others.
